Guwahati, 2 January (HS): The Police Commissionerate, Guwahati achieved significant progress in crime prevention, detection and case disposal during 2025, registering notable improvements across key policing and prosecution indicators.

During 2025, a total of 5,786 cases were registered under the Commissionerate, marking a steady decline compared to 7,412 cases in 2024 and 9,393 cases in 2023. By the end of the year, total pending cases stood at 2,882. Since the beginning of 2021, when 35,396 cases were pending, the Commissionerate has reduced pendency by over 32,000 cases within four years, reflecting sustained efforts in case disposal.

The charge-sheeting performance also showed sharp improvement. In 2025, the charge-sheet percentage rose to 68.34 per cent, compared to 42.56 per cent in 2024 and 19.13 per cent in 2023.

Prosecution outcomes improved significantly, with the overall conviction rate rising from 4 per cent in 2021 to 28.5 per cent in 2025. Conviction percentage under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita stood at an impressive 86.08 per cent. Notably, Assam has been ranked number one in the country in the implementation of the new criminal laws.

Crimes against property witnessed a substantial decline. In 2025, 1,854 such cases were registered, far lower than 3,752 cases in 2023 and 2,804 cases in 2024. Enhanced night patrolling and swift response to complaints played a major role in curbing these offences. A total of 2,118 persons were arrested for crimes against property during the year.

Vehicle theft cases dropped sharply to 553 in 2025, compared to 1,118 in 2024 and 1,032 in 2023. During the year, 239 persons were arrested and 267 stolen vehicles were recovered. The recovery rate improved to 48.2 per cent in 2025, up from 34.8 per cent in 2024 and 18.99 per cent in 2023.

In cases of mobile phone theft, 203 cases were registered and 203 accused persons were arrested. As many as 1,159 stolen mobile phones were recovered during the year.

The Commissionerate continued its strong crackdown on drug trafficking under the NDPS Act. In 2025, 406 NDPS cases were registered and 555 persons were arrested. Seizures included 11.919 kg of heroin, 529.301 kg of ganja, 9,865 bottles of psychotropic syrup and 34,918 psychotropic substance tablets. The total market value of the seized contraband was estimated at Rs 28,86,77,250.

Cybercrime control also recorded positive results. The Cyber Police Station at Panbazar, established in 2023, recovered Rs 6,28,56,451 from cyber fraud cases and transferred the amount to victims’ accounts. During 2025, 18 cybercrime cases were registered and 1,784 enquiries were conducted. Cyber awareness programmes were held regularly to educate the public.

Traffic management improved across the city despite several mega events. In 2025, 1,026 road accident cases were registered, down from 1,218 cases in the previous year. Significantly, no road accident was reported on December 31, 2025. During the year, a total fine of Rs 50,21,57,000 was collected for traffic and other violations.

Overall, the 2025 performance of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate reflects strengthened law enforcement, improved prosecution, and effective public safety management across the city.--------
