
Bhubaneswar, 02 January (H.S.): Akshaya Kumar Acharya, former Congress MLA from Nilagiri constituency and a key figure in the region’s development, passed away on Friday at the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital. He was 76.
According to family sources, Acharya had been suffering from cancer for a prolonged period and was undergoing treatment in Mumbai. His health deteriorated suddenly in the early hours of Friday, following which he was first admitted to a hospital in Nilagiri and later shifted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where he breathed his last while undergoing treatment.
Acharya was elected as MLA from Nilagiri twice, in 1980 and 1995. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in initiating several development projects in the constituency, including the construction of a bus stand, establishment of Notified Area Councils (NACs), development of dams and irrigation facilities, and the setting up of educational institutions such as schools and colleges.
