BJP slams Mamata Banerjee over ‘appeasement politics’

Kolkata, 02 January (H.S.): The West Bengal BJP, through a post on the social media platform X on Friday, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government of interfering in Durga Puja-related events. The BJP claimed that the Trinamool Congress government is repeatedly compromising on Durga Puja to appease the Muslim vote bank.

According to the BJP, in 2016, the worship of Goddess Durga by Hindus was allegedly stopped following protests from the Muslim community. The party termed this an attack on religious freedom, stating that the state government disregarded Hindu sentiments at the time.

The post further stated that in 2017, the immersion of Durga idols was prohibited to allow for the Muharram procession. The BJP alleged that this decision was also taken to prioritize a particular community.

The BJP also claimed that in 2025, the location of the Durga Puja pandal or Durga courtyard was changed due to protests from the Muslim community. The party said that such decisions undermine the sanctity of Durga Puja, the biggest Hindu festival in the state.

The BJP alleged that for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Muslim vote bank is more important than Goddess Durga. The party termed the Trinamool Congress government an anti-Hindu regime, stating that religious beliefs are being sidelined for political gains during its tenure.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Trinamool Congress on this issue.
