Magh Bihu Uruka Celebrated Across Assam; Large Fish Draw Crowds in Markets


Guwahati, 13 January (HS): Assam is celebrating the much-awaited Magh Bihu Uruka on Tuesday, a day marked by community feasts where families, friends and neighbours come together to share a meal. The spirit of Bhogali Bihu is visible across the state, with people celebrating the festival with joy and enthusiasm.

On the occasion of Bhogali Uruka, fish markets across Assam witnessed a heavy rush of buyers, as large-sized fish became the main attraction. In Guwahati s Uzan Bazar fish market, several big fish were put on sale, drawing crowds of customers eager to purchase fish of their choice for the festive feast.

A similar scene was witnessed at Gopal Bazar fish market in Nalbari, where a massive Big Head fish weighing 26 kg was brought for sale. The presence of such large fish led to a surge in customer footfall throughout the day.

In Tezpur, the fish market showcased exceptionally large varieties, including a 27 kg chital fish, a 25 kg silghoria fish sold for ₹50,000, and a 30 kg bahu fish, all attracting widespread attention among buyers.

Meanwhile, at Lloyd Enterprise fish market in Bokakhat, a 35 kg Big Head fish was displayed for sale. Along with it, several other varieties such as pithia fish and aari fish were also available, adding to the festive buzz.

With Uruka festivities in full swing, markets across Assam remain lively, reflecting the cultural warmth and traditional spirit of Magh Bihu.-----------
