Kolkata, 13 January (H.S.) : As West Bengal’s iconic Ganga Sagar Mela gets underway with the onset of the new year, a unique ascetic has captured widespread attention. After the recent viral sensation of the ‘IIT Baba’ at the Maha Kumbh, it is now the Ganga Sagar Mela that has found its own internet phenomenon the ‘Light Baba’. His presence has sparked immense curiosity and enthusiasm among devotees and visitors alike.

With no Maha Kumbh being held this year, a large congregation of sadhus has gathered at the Ganga Sagar Mela. Ascetics from across the country have arrived at this sacred site for the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

What sets Light Baba apart is his striking appearance and demeanor. He has no right arm, wears spectacles, and his body is smeared with ash. Seated calmly at his designated spot, he creates an atmosphere distinctly different from other sadhus. The most eye-catching element, however, is the colorful string lights wrapped around his body. In the darkness of night, the glowing lights give him an almost rockstar-like stage presence, instantly drawing attention.

Within a short span of time, Light Baba has become a major attraction at the fair. Devotees are flocking to his hut some seeking blessings, others eager to capture photos and videos on their mobile phones. Images and clips shared on social media have propelled him to viral fame.

The Ganga Sagar Mela, which began with the new year, continues to witness an influx of lakhs of pilgrims from India and abroad, all arriving for the holy dip at the confluence. The presence of thousands of sadhus, including Naga sadhus and Aghoris, has turned Sagar Island into a vibrant spiritual hub. Amid this massive gathering, Light Baba has stood out with his unconventional style, becoming one of the most talked-about figures of this year’s fair.

The fusion of spiritual tradition with modern visual elements has made Light Baba a symbol of the colorful and evolving character of the Ganga Sagar Mela, adding a unique charm to the sacred celebrations of Makar Sankranti.
