Guwahati, 13 January (HS): Guwahati Police on Tuesday arrested two drug carriers and seized a huge quantity of heroin during a major operation against narcotics trafficking in Assam. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police intercepted two vehicles at Amingaon and recovered a large consignment of heroin that was being transported through Assam from a neighbouring state.

According to police, a Thar vehicle bearing registration number AS 23 AD 6626 and a Maruti Jimny bearing registration number AS 01 GN 7404 were stopped at Amingaon. During a thorough search, heroin concealed in specially made hidden chambers was recovered from both vehicles. In total, 97 soap cases containing heroin were seized, of which 40 packets were recovered from the Thar and 57 packets from the Jimny.

The total weight of the seized heroin, excluding the soap covers, was found to be 1 kilogram and 358 grams. The drivers of both vehicles were arrested in connection with the case.

The arrested persons have been identified as Anwar Hussain Qazi (33), son of Junab Qazi, a resident of Qazi Para, Pal Haji under Barpeta police station, and Aminul Sikdar (33).

Police officials stated that the estimated international market value of the seized narcotics is around Rs 11 crore. Further legal proceedings in the case are underway. ----------
