Chennai, 13 January (H.S.) : In a significant stride toward social inclusion and empowerment, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, officially inducted seven transgender persons into the Tamil Nadu Home Guards (TNHG) during a ceremony held on Tuesday.
This landmark event marks the formal beginning of a pilot project that aims to integrate a total of 50 transgender recruits into the state’s auxiliary security force.
The recruits, who have successfully completed specialized training, will now take on responsibilities such as crowd control, traffic management, and providing security assistance during major festivals and public events.
The Chief Minister presented the appointment orders as a symbolic gesture, highlighting the state’s commitment to providing dignified employment opportunities for the transgender community.
According to an official statement from the Government of Tamil Nadu, this recruitment drive is a key component of the State Policy for Transgender Persons 2025.
This policy envisages the inclusion of the community across various government departments to ensure their socio-economic development and integration into mainstream society.
During the event, CM Stalin emphasized that the state remains a pioneer in transgender welfare, noting that the government has recently enhanced monthly pensions and expanded scholarship schemes like Puthumai Penn to include transgender students. Authorities stated that the first phase of this deployment will be concentrated in Chennai, Tambaram, and Avadi.
By providing these individuals with official uniforms, remuneration, and training on par with other Home Guards, the government seeks to break long-standing systemic barriers and foster a more inclusive public service environment in the state.
