Ahmedabad , 12 January (H.S.): German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Monday for a two-day official visit to India—marking his first trip to Asia since assuming office.Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a warm welcome to Chancellor Merz at the iconic Sabarmati Ashram, where the two leaders reviewed progress on the ashram's redevelopment project.
Following their deliberations at the ashram, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz traveled together in the same vehicle to the Sabarmati Riverfront. The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the International Kite Festival 2026 at the riverfront later today, coinciding with the vibrant Uttarayan festival.
Speculation is rife that the two leaders might join in the festivities by flying kites side by side, delighting kite enthusiasts from across India and abroad who are participating in the event.
Chancellor Merz's visit aims to bolster India-Germany ties across key domains, including trade, investment, defense, and critical technologies. Bilateral talks are also on the agenda, where discussions are expected to cover various facets of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
