Chennai, 12 January (H.S.) : The producer of the highly anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan has approached the Supreme Court on Monday following a legal standoff with the Central Board of Film Certification. Venkat K NARAYANA of KVN Productions filed the appeal after a Division Bench of the Madras High Court stayed an earlier order that directed the board to issue a clearance certificate.
The film, which stars actor-politician Vijay in what is billed as his final cinematic appearance before transitioning into full-time politics with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was originally scheduled for a grand release on January 9. However, the release was postponed after the board referred the movie to a Revising Committee despite previous indications of approval.
According to statements from the production house, the film was submitted for certification in December 2025 and the makers had incorporated all suggested modifications. Authorities at the Censor Board later cited a complaint regarding scenes that allegedly hurt religious sentiments and the portrayal of the defence forces as reasons for the further delay.
While a single judge of the High Court had initially ordered the immediate issuance of a U/A 16+ certificate, the Division Bench intervened, noting that the board required more time to present its case. The producer emphasized that the film represents decades of hard work and that the lead actor deserves a fitting farewell.
The legal battle has drawn widespread attention from the film fraternity and fans alike, as the Supreme Court is now expected to provide clarity on the certification dispute. This development has left the Pongal release plans for the political actioner in a state of uncertainty.
