Chennai, 12 January (H.S.) : A unique heritage walk titled Houses of Mylapore: Design and Architecture was organized on Sunday evening to explore the rich architectural history of one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in the city.

The event focused on traditional house designs, ancient construction techniques, and the various social influences reflected in the exterior facades of historic buildings.

The walk was organized by Ashmitha ATHREYA, an architect and the Head of Operations at Madras Inherited, who has been conducting such cultural explorations for over six years. The journey commenced at the Jain Temple on Kutchery Road and navigated through several iconic areas including Arunachala Mudali Street and Bazaar Road.

During the session, participants observed intricate architectural details that are often overlooked in the modern era, such as ornamental windows and carved doors. Ashmitha Atheria stated that walking through these streets allows people to understand how cultural influences have shaped domestic designs over time. She noted that this was her first specific walk in Mylapore and expressed satisfaction with the high level of public interest.

Various attendees, including civil engineers and architects, mentioned that the experience provided a fresh perspective on how modern architecture has evolved from these basic traditional principles. The authorities of the organizing group highlighted that the layout of courtyards and verandahs served both functional and social purposes in early Chennai housing.

The one hour walk successfully bridged the gap between historical craftsmanship and contemporary urban design.
