New Delhi, 10 January (H.S.): The Supreme Court continued its hearing on Saturday into the stray dogs issue before a bench presided over by Justice Vikram Nath. Senior advocate and animal rights activist Mahalaxmi Pavani raised concerns about derogatory remarks made against women who keep dogs. The court scheduled the next hearing for January 13.
During the proceedings, Pavani highlighted large-scale illegal breeding and the unlawful import of foreign dog breeds. She noted that Pit Bulls and Huskies were being abandoned on streets. The court clarified that such matters fell outside the stray dogs case and urged focus on the core issues at hand, emphasizing adherence to remedies available under the law.Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi urged the court to refrain from intervention, arguing that existing laws and regulations sufficed.
He contended that if Parliament had deliberately chosen not to act, the judiciary should similarly abstain. On January 8, the Supreme Court had observed that dogs sense human fear and attack accordingly.
