New Delhi, September 2(HS): Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has arrived in India today for a significant three-day official visit from September 2 to 4, marking his first visit to India in his capacity as Prime Minister. This visit commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore and aims to strengthen the robust, multi-dimensional partnership between the two nations.
Accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation of ministers and senior officials, PM Wong’s trip includes bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review and deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. The leaders are set to explore collaboration on regional and global issues, and sign key agreements spanning sectors such as finance, digital innovation, civil aviation, skill development, defense, and sustainable growth.
During the visit, PM Wong will meet the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and hold engagements with several prominent Indian ministers and officials. He will also pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat and engage with overseas Singaporeans in India as both nations celebrate their diamond jubilee of diplomatic ties and Singapore’s 60 years of independence.
This visit follows the elevation of India-Singapore ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024, underscoring Singapore’s role as a key economic and strategic partner in India’s Act East policy. PM Wong’s delegation includes notable ministers such as Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan and Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, with Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam serving as Acting Prime Minister in his absence.
The visit is poised to further consolidate a dynamic partnership marked by growing trade, investment, and people-to-people links, reaffirming a shared vision for enhanced cooperation in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
