Delhi/Tianjin, 1 September (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the plenary session of the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State Council summit today, September 1, 2025, in Tianjin, China. Following his address, he will hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before returning to India.

The two-day SCO summit, held in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1, has brought together leaders from Eurasian countries, including China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Central Asian states. PM Modi's presence is significant as it marks his first visit to China in over seven years and comes amid efforts to reset India-China relations after years of border tensions. During the summit's opening, Modi held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, focusing on stabilizing bilateral ties and narrowing the trade deficit while emphasizing mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.

PM Modi's address at the plenary session will outline India’s approach to advancing regional cooperation under the SCO framework. The summit emphasizes themes like regional security, counter-terrorism, trade, climate action, and fostering a multipolar world order. PM Modi's scheduled talks with Putin are expected to deepen India-Russia cooperation on trade and defense, amidst global economic uncertainties, including the impact of U.S. tariffs.

This SCO summit is taking place against the backdrop of a major military parade in Beijing commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, highlighting the broader significance of the gathering for international diplomacy.
