New Delhi, September 1(HS): A significant leap in digital inclusion for tribal communities was marked on Monday with the launch of the Adi Vaani app, an innovative tool capable of translating five tribal languages— Mundari, Santali, Pui, Gondi, and Bhili—into Hindi and English. Initiated by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the app was unveiled at the Ambedkar International Centre in the presence of Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uike, who hailed the app as a milestone in the digitization and global outreach of tribal languages.
Developed with technical assistance from premier institutions including IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Raipur, and BITS Pilani, and enriched with linguistic data from tribal research centers in Ranchi, Raipur, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh, the app streamlines translation through text, voice, or document input with immediate results. Initially covering five languages representing tribal regions across Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, the app aims to expand further in the future.
Beyond mere translation, Adi Vaani also functions as a dynamic dictionary. The Ministry envisions the app to serve as a vital conduit to disseminate government schemes and public utility information to tribal populations digitally, empowering these communities with enhanced communication tools and access.
