Kolkata, 1 September (H.S.):

A week after the shocking murder of a student in Krishnanagar, the main accused, Deshraj Singh, has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh. The arrest took place early Monday morning, and Singh is being brought to Kolkata on transit remand. The state police have described the breakthrough as a major success.

According to investigators, Singh allegedly shot his former girlfriend dead inside her home last Monday after their relationship ended. Following the crime, he went absconding, prompting police to launch a large-scale manhunt across several states. Teams tracked his movements and conducted raids at multiple hideouts in Uttar Pradesh.

On Sunday, Singh’s maternal uncle, Kuldeep Singh, was arrested from Jamnagar in Gujarat. During interrogation, he admitted to helping his nephew find shelter and evade arrest. Based on the leads obtained, police managed to trace Deshraj’s location. Officials revealed that the accused was planning to flee to Nepal but was intercepted before he could cross the border.

Speaking at a press conference, Krishnanagar Police District SP Amarnath said, “Deshraj was nabbed while attempting to reach the Indo-Nepal border. The information provided by his uncle proved crucial. Our teams worked tirelessly, and the cooperation of the victim’s family was invaluable despite their trauma. We had key leads within the first few hours, which made this success possible.”

The accused is likely to be produced before the Ranaghat court on Tuesday.
