Bhubaneswar, 1 September (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal by Tuesday evening, likely to intensify monsoon activity across Odisha. The system is expected to sustain widespread rainfall in the state until September 3.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Koraput, while a yellow alert has been declared for all other districts. Officials warned of localised disruption due to heavy downpours, flooding risks, and waterlogging.
Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi are expected to witness very heavy rainfall ranging between 12 and 20 cm in short spells, prompting heightened vigilance by district administrations. Interior and southern Odisha are particularly vulnerable to intense showers.
In addition, authorities cautioned about thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, which could damage weak structures, affect standing crops, disrupt road transport, and pose risks to outdoor activities.
The forecast follows earlier IMD advisories predicting enhanced rainfall over a four-day period. Northern districts, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, have already been placed on special alert for extremely heavy rain.
Officials have urged the public to remain alert and avoid venturing into flood-prone areas, while district administrations have been advised to keep disaster management units on standby
