Kolkata, 1 Sept (H.S.): In a shocking incident from Kharagpur, a young woman suffering from a rare mental illness was abandoned by her entire family, leaving her to fend for herself. The girl, identified as Rejowana Khatun, a resident of Ward No. 5, Devangpur near Kharagpur railway station, has recently become the center of public attention due to her violent outbursts.

Locals allege that Rejowana repeatedly created disturbances in the neighborhood, damaging shop windows, house panes, and even vehicles. Her father, Md. Riyowan Dafij, reportedly paid compensation multiple times but eventually fell into heavy debt. Unable to bear the financial and social pressure, he locked up the family house and fled. Neighbors revealed that Rejowana’s brother, Md. Rejaul, also left home out of fear.

Initially admitted to Chandmari Hospital in Kharagpur, Rejowana allegedly assaulted doctors and nurses before escaping. She is now undergoing treatment at Srirampur Walsh Hospital. However, before her admission, there was no trace of her family, prompting the hospital to seek help from the West Bengal Radio Club (HAM).

Amburish Nag Biswas, Secretary of the West Bengal Radio Club, informed Hindusthan Samachar on Monday that the request came from Walsh Hospital Assistant Superintendent Basudev Joradar. A HAM team managed to trace her father at Chandrakona Road station. On seeing his daughter’s picture, the distraught man broke down in tears, saying:

“She is my only daughter, but because of her, I have lost everything. I can no longer pay compensation. If I am forced again, I will end my life.”

Local Ward No. 5 Councillor Md. Fida Hussain expressed grave concern over the case, stressing the urgent need for proper medical care, particularly specialized psychiatric treatment.

Hospital authorities assured that no compromise would be made in Rejowana’s treatment. Doctors confirmed that she suffers from a rare mental disorder that causes sudden violent behavior, compelling her to attack anyone or anything in her path—humans, animals, or objects. They added that long-term treatment and careful supervision would be essential for her recovery.
