Kolkata, 7 August (H.S.) –

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) results, which were scheduled to be released on Thursday, have been deferred following oral observations by Justice Kaushik Chanda of the Calcutta High Court. The decision came during the hearing of a petition related to OBC reservations, where the court observed that the merit list prepared under the current parameters cannot be published.

The High Court directed that a new merit list must be prepared based on the categorization of OBC-A and OBC-B as per a division bench order issued on May 22. Additionally, the court instructed the state government to re-evaluate the OBC list prepared under the seven percent reservation criteria.

Justice Chanda clarified that the WBJEE Board must revise the merit list considering 66 reserved candidates who fall under the pre-2010 seven percent OBC quota. This process must be completed within the next 15 days.

The Chief Secretary has been instructed to ensure that the court’s order is promptly communicated to all relevant departments. Furthermore, all admission and recruitment processes must now comply with the court’s directive. Within three weeks, a senior official of the state government, not below the rank of Special Secretary, must file an affidavit detailing the implementation of the order.

Last week, the WBJEE Board had indicated that the results could be declared on August 7. However, uncertainty loomed due to the ongoing legal proceedings related to OBC reservations. The High Court's latest directive has now clarified the situation.

In addition to the WBJEE results, the undergraduate merit lists were also scheduled to be released on Thursday. But late Wednesday night, officials from the Higher Education Department cited technical issues and confirmed that the list would be delayed.

As a result of this development, the future of thousands of aspiring students remains uncertain.
