Kolkata, 7 August (H.S.):

In a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate seized 53.50 kilograms of cannabis and arrested two individuals involved in its illegal transportation. The operation was conducted under the direction of Commissioner of Police Muralidhar Sharma.

Acting on a tip-off received on Wednesday, August 6, a joint team comprising officers from the Narcotics Division (DD), Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, and Nagarbazar Police Station intercepted a suspicious vehicle near a water tank on Nayapatti Road. Following a coordinated cordon-and-search operation, the team recovered a large quantity of cannabis from the vehicle.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Subrata Dey (60), a resident of Subhash Palli in Cooch Behar district, and Surjit Biswas (34), from Sanyal Char village under Chakdah Police Station in Nadia district. During preliminary interrogation, both suspects reportedly admitted to their involvement in cannabis trafficking. The seized narcotics and the vehicle used in the operation have been taken into custody.

The police have registered a case under the NDPS Act (Case No. 172/25) at Nagarbazar Police Station. After completing all legal formalities, the accused will be presented before the court, where police will seek custody to further investigate the trafficking network.

Commissioner Muralidhar Sharma emphasized that the police are following a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and vowed that such operations will be intensified in the coming days to dismantle illegal drug networks in the region.
