Delhi, 6 August (H.S.): Lok Sabha resumed at noon on Wednesday amidst disruptions as Opposition MPs protested the Bihar SIR issue. The session was adjourned until 2 PM after Opposition members stormed the well of the House. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that discussions on poll roll revision in Bihar were not feasible due to the matter being pending before the Supreme Court. He urged the Opposition to facilitate the functioning of the House, emphasizing the importance of various issues awaiting discussion. He mentioned that despite the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 being on the agenda, they would address it later due to Opposition requests. The Lok Sabha passed the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 before adjourning, scheduled to reconvene at 11 AM on Thursday.
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Chair for perceived unfairness regarding a Point of Order, while BJP MP J.P. Nadda remarked that those creating disorder have no standing to raise procedural objections. The Opposition continued to demand discussions on the Bihar SIR, leading to further protests as the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025 passed. Rajya Sabha was adjourned until August 7 at 11 AM.
In a separate development, the BRS party submitted an adjournment motion in the Rajya Sabha to discuss the controversial Godavari-Banakacherla project from Andhra Pradesh, claiming it would divert water and harm Telangana farmers. The motion was denied by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh. BRS leaders emphasized that the project contravenes inter-State water-sharing agreements and poses a threat to Telangana’s water security, accusing the Telangana Congress government of negligence regarding farmers' rights. The BRS asserted it would persist in advocating for Telangana’s interests.
