New Delhi, August 6 (HS): Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, has sent a four-point letter to Deputy Chairman Harivansh, urging an immediate discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, particularly concerning Bihar. He noted that this issue significantly affects millions of voters, especially those from vulnerable and marginalized communities, and requires parliamentary deliberation. Kharge highlighted that opposition MPs have consistently called for this discussion since the current parliamentary session began, yet no action has been taken.

He referenced a prior decision by the then Chairperson on July 21, 2023, affirming that the Rajya Sabha can discuss any topic, except those related to judicial duties. The letter outlined that the Election Commission's review process would extend beyond Bihar to states like West Bengal and Assam.

Kharge stressed the urgency of the matter, arguing that any potential impact on the voting rights of marginalized groups is a serious concern that warrants immediate attention. He contended that a discussion in the Rajya Sabha is essential to uphold transparency and accountability in the electoral process, emphasizing that this revision process is linked to the very foundation of democracy.
