Delhi, 5 August (H.S.): Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Satya Pal Malik, passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 79. He held governorships in Meghalaya, Goa, Odisha, and Bihar.
Malik's political journey began in the mid-1960s, inspired by Ram Manohar Lohia's socialist ideology. He joined the BJP in 2004, becoming its national vice-president in 2012, and was part of Prime Minister Modi's team for the 2014 Lok Sabha election. He was from the influential Jat community in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat with roots in Haryana.
His brief affiliation with Congress in the 1980s led to his election to the Rajya Sabha. Appointed Bihar Governor in 2017, he oversaw the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 and served as Meghalaya Governor until October 4, 2022.
