Delhi, 5 August (H.S.): PM Modi welcomed the President of the Philippines and his delegation to India at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He highlighted the long-standing cultural connections between the two nations, referencing the Philippine version of the Ramayana, Maharadia Lawana, and the release of postage stamps symbolizing their friendship.

PM Modi emphasized that their discussions covered mutual cooperation, regional concerns, and international issues, culminating in the elevation of relations to a Strategic Partnership, supported by a comprehensive Action Plan. He noted the growth of bilateral trade surpassing $3 billion and prioritized the review of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement along with a commitment to a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement.

Collaboration spans various sectors, including Information Technology, healthcare, automobiles, and science, with significant joint research efforts ongoing. PM Modi specifically mentioned the Regional Center of the International Rice Research Institute in Varanasi working on health-focused rice and plans to enhance Quick Impact Projects in the Philippines, alongside developing sovereign data cloud infrastructure. Additionally, an agreement to foster space cooperation was signed.

The strengthening of defense ties was acknowledged as a sign of mutual trust, particularly as maritime cooperation is essential for both nations. PM Modi reflected on collaborative efforts in humanitarian aid and disaster relief and noted the participation of Indian Navy ships in naval exercises in the Philippines.

India expressed gratitude towards the Philippines for condemning the Pulwama terrorist attack and enhancing security through agreements on Mutual Legal Assistance and the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. PM Modi also highlighted the Philippines' decision to allow visa-free entry for Indian tourists, with India reciprocating by providing Free E-Visa facilities and plans for direct flights between Delhi and Manila.

The conclusion of a Cultural Exchange Program was intended to bolster historical connections. PM Modi described the Philippines as a vital partner in India's Act East Policy and Ocean Vision, pledging to uphold peace, security, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. He assured full support for the Philippines’ upcoming ASEAN chairmanship, affirming that India and the Philippines are united by shared values and a promising future together.
