Udalguri (Assam), 03 August (HS): A tragic incident unfolded in Majbat's Shikaridanga No. 2 Bagoribari, located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, where a wild elephant attack left one woman dead and four others seriously injured early Saturday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Lavanya Bodo, who was trampled to death while sleeping on the verandah of her home around 2:30 am. The elephant had reportedly entered the village from Arunachal Pradesh in search of food and caused extensive damage to three houses before attacking Lavanya.
Four other members of the family sustained serious injuries in the attack. They have been identified as Ravilal Hembram (51), Mariam Suren (45), Paltan Hembram (12), and Lakshmi Hembram (10). In a miraculous escape, Lavanya’s daughter-in-law managed to save herself, her four-month-old baby and her son by ducking under the elephant’s belly.
The incident has created widespread panic and sorrow in the village. Forest department officials, along with Lalpani police, rushed to the spot upon receiving the report. Lavanya Bodo’s body was taken into custody and sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Residents allege that the elephant has been terrorizing the area for a while, highlighting the growing human-wildlife conflict in the region.
