Lakhimpur (Assam), 03 August (HS): In a shocking case from Dhemaji district’s Dhakuakhana area in Assam, a woman allegedly sold her newborn daughter soon after birth. The incident has sparked outrage as it highlights a disturbing act of cruelty and betrayal.

According to police sources, the incident took place in Jiyamoria village under Dhakuakhana Sadar police station. A woman named Pampi Dutta, wife of Mintu Koch, gave birth to a baby girl at a private multi-specialty hospital in Chaboti, Lakhimpur, and subsequently sold the infant to a man named Prabal Das, a resident of Fatasil Ambari in Guwahati.

Reportedly, Pampi had been staying at her parental home in Makarachuk for the past six months. There, she and her mother, Punya Dutta, allegedly conspired to sell the baby through a middleman. They struck a deal with Prabal Das, believed to be a well-known individual in Guwahati.

Without informing her husband, Pampi delivered the child and handed her over to Das. When Mintu Koch enquired about the child, he was falsely told that Pampi had suffered a miscarriage.

Suspicious of the explanation, Koch reported the matter to Dhakuakhana Sadar Police. During the investigation, police recovered crucial evidence from the suspects’ mobile phones. This led them to Guwahati, where they successfully rescued the baby girl from Das’s residence.

Both Pampi Dutta and her mother have been arrested and booked under Section 143(4) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is ongoing.
