“Tributes to Pingali Venkayya Ji on his birth anniversary. He is remembered for his role in giving us the Tricolour, which is our pride!

Like always, let’s strengthen #HarGharTiranga movement and fly the Tricolour. Do upload your selfie or photos on harghartiranga.com”

Pingali Venkayya was born on 2 August 1876 in Bhatlapenumarru, Andhra Pradesh, was a prominent Indian freedom fighter credited with designing the early version of the Indian National Flag. He joined the British Indian Army at 19 and served in South Africa during the Second Boer War, where he recognized the necessity of a national flag for India. He presented his design, featuring red and green stripes for Hindus and Muslims, to Mahatma Gandhi in 1921, to which a white stripe was later added to represent other communities. This flag was informally used in Congress meetings and became the foundation for the official national flag adopted on 22 July 1947. Although an agriculturist and educationist who established a school in Machilipatnam, he died in poverty in 1963, largely unrecognized. His contributions were later honored posthumously by the Indian government.
