Kolkata, 2 August (H.S.) Youth Congress workers took to the streets of Kolkata on Saturday and took out a rally against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states. Holding placards in their hands and raising slogans, the protesters marched to the Raj Bhavan.
However, the march was halted due to police intervention at Dharmatala near the Raj Bhavan and several protesters were detained when they tried to break police barricades. The protesters alleged that the migrants were being mistreated and forcibly sent to Bangladesh.
At the same time, the women wing of the Trinamool Congress gave further momentum to the movement by staging a sit-in on Mayo Road. Party leader Mamata Banerjee launched the 'language movement' on July 28, in which she advocated for Bengali rights and compared it to the historic language movement of 1952 in Dhaka. However, such rallies are expected to continue till the upcoming assembly elections.
