Chennai, 17 August (H.S.) : A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, prompting a heavy rain alert for several parts of Tamil Nadu. The system, influenced by an upper-air cyclonic circulation, is currently located off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha.

According to the Meteorological Department, it is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours and is likely to cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around August 19.

This weather development is forecasted to bring light to moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu from August 17 to August 23. Specifically, the Nilgiris district and the ghat areas of Coimbatore are under a heavy rain alert for August 17. The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has also issued a forecast for thunderstorms and strong winds in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

In Chennai, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies with a possibility of light to moderate rain on both August 17 and 18. Additionally, strong winds gusting up to 40-50 kmph are expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area on Monday and Tuesday, as the weather system progresses.
