Delhi/Naples(Italy),August 17(HS): In a landmark demonstration of growing India-Italy defence cooperation, INS Tamal—the Indian Navy’s newest stealth frigate—successfully concluded a four-day port call at Naples, Italy, from August 13 to 16, 2025. The visit underscored the robust bilateral partnership between the two nations, formally elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2023.

INS Tamal’s arrival followed an impressive Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with ITS Trieste, the Italian Navy's recently commissioned Landing Helicopter Dock. Both ships engaged in high-level joint operations including sophisticated communications drills, coordinated manoeuvres, flying exercises, and the ceremonial exchange of sea riders, all culminating in a dramatic steam past off Naples.

During her stay, INS Tamal became a hub for reinforcing defence and diplomatic engagement. The ship’s Commanding Officer met with Vice Admiral Pierpaolo Budri, Chief of Staff of the Logistics Command, and Ms. Laura Lieto, Deputy Mayor of Naples, where talks focused on implementing the India-Italy Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029.

Cultural diplomacy took centre stage as the crew, together with the Embassy of India in Rome, hosted a vibrant cultural program onboard. Attendees included senior officials from the local government, the Italian Navy, Rome-based diplomats, UN agency delegates, and leaders from the Italian defence industry. India’s Ambassador to Italy, H.E. Mrs. Vani Rao, joined the festivities, interacting with INS Tamal’s sailors and Italian navy counterparts.

A ceremonial parade marked India’s 79th Independence Day on August 15, with crew members also participating in celebrations at the Embassy in Rome, expounding India’s commitment to fostering mutual understanding and camaraderie.

INS Tamal’s port call highlighted India’s strategic emphasis on advancing defence partnerships, operational interoperability, and maritime diplomacy. As the frigate continues her journey home, with stops planned at further European and Asian ports, she will continue to serve as a floating emblem of India’s commitment to security and cooperation across continents.
