Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Urges PM Modi for Relief as US Tariffs Threaten State's Exports and Jobs

Chennai, 16 August (H.S.) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking urgent relief from the proposed US tariffs on Indian exports. The US has imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports, with plans to escalate it to 50%, which could severely impact Tamil Nadu's manufacturing sector and cost millions of jobs. Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu exports 31% of its goods to the US, far above the national average of 20%.

In his letter, Stalin emphasized the state's significant dependence on the US market and warned that the tariff hike could devastate the state's economy. He urged the Prime Minister to take immediate action to mitigate the impact of the tariffs and protect the interests of Tamil Nadu's exporters and workers.

The Chief Minister's appeal comes at a time when the state's exporters are already facing challenges due to the global economic slowdown. With the proposed tariff hike, the situation could worsen, leading to significant job losses and economic instability. Stalin's letter underscores the need for the central government to intervene and negotiate with the US to reduce or eliminate the tariffs.

The development has raised concerns among stakeholders, who are worried about the potential impact on the state's economy and employment. The TN government has been working to promote exports and create jobs, but the proposed US tariffs could undermine these efforts. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the Prime Minister's response to Stalin's appeal.
