New Delhi, Aug 14(HS): In a major legal setback for Kannada film star Darshan Thoogudeepa, the Supreme Court of India on Thursday revoked the bail granted to him by the Karnataka High Court in the high-profile Renukaswamy murder case, ordering his immediate taken into custody.
A bench headed by Justice J.B. Pardiwala delivered the order, which comes after the court had reserved its verdict on July 24.
The Karnataka High Court had, on December 13, 2024, granted regular bail to Darshan and several co-accused, a decision later challenged before the apex court. Prior to that, on October 30, 2024, the High Court had allowed the actor six weeks of interim bail on medical grounds.
Darshan was arrested on June 11, 2024, in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy, a 33-year-old auto-rickshaw driver and devoted fan of the actor. The killing took place on June 8, 2024, sending shockwaves through Karnataka and the Kannada film industry.
According to case details, the fan-turned-victim’s death triggered widespread media attention, public outrage, and intense legal scrutiny, making the case one of the most closely followed criminal trials in recent times in the state.
With the bail now cancelled, Darshan faces an immediate return to judicial custody as the trial continues.
