Udine (Italy) ,August 14 (HS): Paris Saint‑Germain carved out a slice of European football history on Wednesday night, edging Tottenham Hotspur 4–3 on penalties after a dramatic 2–2 draw to claim their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title.
At the Stadio Friuli, it looked as though newly appointed Spurs boss Thomas Frank would mark his debut with silverware. The Europa League champions struck twice without reply — Micky van de Ven breaking the deadlock in the 39th minute before Cristian Romero powered home a second just after half-time.
Late PSG Fightback
But PSG’s depth proved decisive. Substitute Lee Kang‑in pulled one back in the 85th minute with a composed finish. Then, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Gonçalo Ramos met a pinpoint cross to nod in the equaliser, sending the match to a nerve‑shredding shootout.
Shootout Nerve
The penalty drama began with Vitinha missing PSG’s opener, piling on the pressure. However, debutant goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier came up huge, saving Van de Ven’s effort to restore parity. When Spurs’ Mathys Tel fired over, the door was open for PSG. Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé, and Lee all converted before Nuno Mendes smashed home the winner.
For Tottenham, Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro found the net, but their two misses proved costly.
A Landmark for French Football
This win makes PSG the first French club ever to win the UEFA Super Cup and marks their fifth trophy of 2025. It also offered swift redemption for Luis Enrique’s squad after their recent FIFA Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea.
With the historic triumph, PSG now turn their focus to Sunday’s Ligue 1 opener against Nantes, while Tottenham prepare for Saturday’s Premier League season kick-off at Burnley.
