New Delhi, August 17(HS): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed deep sadness at the passing of legendary Australian cricketer and former captain Bob Simpson, who died in Sydney on Saturday at the age of 89.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Sunday, ICC Chairman Jay Shah paid tribute to Simpson’s immense legacy. “Bob Simpson was one of the true greats of our game, and it is deeply saddening to hear of his passing. His legacy is monumental. As a player, captain, and later as a coach, he not only helped shape Australian cricket but also inspired the global game,” Shah said.

He further added that Simpson’s influence extended far beyond the boundary line. “He nurtured and guided a generation of players who went on to become legends in their own right. On behalf of the ICC, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricketing fraternity. His passing is an irreparable loss to the sport, but his contributions will be cherished forever,” Shah noted.

A member of the ICC Hall of Fame, Simpson represented Australia in 62 Test matches between 1957 and 1978, amassing 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81, including 10 centuries, 27 fifties, and a career-best 311. A versatile cricketer, he also claimed 71 wickets with his leg-spin and took a remarkable 110 catches as a brilliant slip fielder.

After initially retiring in 1968, Simpson made a dramatic comeback a decade later in 1978, taking charge of the Australian side as captain at the age of 41. Post-retirement, he became Australia’s first full-time head coach, later serving as a national selector and playing a pivotal role in rebuilding the team during its formative years of dominance.

Bob Simpson leaves behind not just statistics, but a lasting legacy as a leader, mentor, and pioneer whose impact reshaped Australian cricket and influenced the sport worldwide.
