New Delhi,August 14(HS): In a landmark step towards transforming India’s healthcare ecosystem, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the Wadhwani Foundation have jointly inaugurated a Centre of Excellence in Precision and Personalised Healthcare under the Wadhwani Innovation Network (WIN).

The state-of-the-art centre, located at IIT Delhi’s Research and Innovation Park, aims to accelerate the translation of AI-driven health technologies, biotechnology, and bioengineering research into commercially viable solutions that could revolutionise healthcare delivery in India.

The inaugural ceremony, held on Wednesday, was attended by Dr. Ajay Kela, CEO and Board Member of Wadhwani Foundation, and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, along with eminent figures from India’s healthcare and innovation sectors, including Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, Dr. Taruna Madan, and Rajiv Nath.

Driving Healthcare Innovation at Scale

In its first phase, the centre will focus on critical areas such as:

- Personalised medicine and rehabilitation

- Bio-imaging and AI-powered diagnostic tools

- Assistive technologies for the elderly and differently-abled

- Customised biomedical implants

- Low-cost wearable devices and diagnostic solutions

Wadhwani Foundation has committed to investing over ₹1,400 crore in India, setting up innovation centres across diverse sectors as part of a national programme to boost research and entrepreneurship. This initiative was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29, 2025.

Bridging the Lab-to-Market Gap

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ajay Kela stressed the need to shorten the journey from research to real-world impact:

India is blessed with world-class scientific talent, but translating research into societal impact has been painfully slow. With the WIN Centre, we aim to close this gap — bringing healthcare innovations to market faster and saving millions of lives.

Professor Rangan Banerjee highlighted the global ambitions of the initiative:

Our goal is to develop solutions that address India’s healthcare challenges while setting new benchmarks on the global stage. This WIN Centre will act as a catalyst for strengthening India’s innovation ecosystem and unlocking new possibilities in healthcare.
