Kolkata, 12 August (H.S.) – The father of the RG Kar Medical College victim has levelled serious allegations against the police, claiming that during the Nabanna Abhiyan protest march, a police officer deliberately attacked his wife with intent to cause serious harm. In a written complaint sent via email to the Shakespeare Sarani police station, he stated that a policeman struck his wife’s head and back with a baton, injuring her and breaking the conch shell she was wearing on her hand.

A senior officer on Tuesday confirmed that an investigation has been initiated based on the email. The complainant alleged that the attack was premeditated and purposeful, intended to inflict grievous injuries, and could have endangered her life. Following the incident, she was admitted to a private hospital near EM Bypass. Even after returning home, she continues to suffer from head trauma. He has demanded that an FIR be registered and a formal investigation launched on the basis of his email complaint.

Earlier, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma had termed the mother’s injury “unfortunate” and stated that she could file a complaint if she wished. He also mentioned that the police were conducting their own inquiry into the matter. However, there has been no clear statement from the police yet on whether an FIR will be lodged based on the email.

Meanwhile, Lalbazar issued a statement on social media regarding Saturday’s Nabanna Abhiyan events. According to police, the protesters violated Calcutta High Court directives by marching towards Park Street instead of Rani Rashmoni Avenue. The police also alleged that the agitators vandalised a political party’s Rakhi stall, damaged the office of a hawkers’ union, attacked a policeman, broke a journalist’s camera and held him back. A total of five FIRs have been registered in this connection — four at New Market police station and one at Hare Street police station.

Cases have been filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is underway. The police have not revealed the name of the political party allegedly involved in the incidents.
