New Delhi, August 1(HS): India asserted on Friday that its relationship with the United States remains robust, despite US President Donald Trump's threats to raise tariffs. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the India-US partnership is based on shared interests, democratic values, and strong people-to-people connections, and he expressed confidence in its continued progress amid challenges.
Jaiswal addressed President Trump's concerns over India's crude oil purchases from Russia, stating that India’s international relations are guided by mutual interests and should not be influenced by third parties. He characterized the India-Russia relationship as stable, highlighting its historical resilience.
The spokesperson did not directly respond to the US warnings but reiterated that India's approach to energy procurement is based on market conditions and the global context. In response to questions about halting oil purchases from Russia, he indicated a lack of specific information.
Regarding US sanctions on Indian companies purchasing oil from Iran, he acknowledged awareness of the reports. He affirmed the importance of India's defence relations with both the US and Russia and stressed that defense procurement is driven by national security needs.The strong and evolving defence partnership with the US underlines the significant potential for the India-US relationship to grow further, while refraining from commenting on President Trump's suggestion about India's potential oil dealings with Pakistan.
