Delhi, 9 July (H.S.):National Fish Farmers Day honors the commitment of fish farmers in India, emphasizing their vital contributions to food security, protein supply, and rural employment. Celebrated on July 10, 2025, this day also pays tribute to Professor Dr. Hiralal Chaudhury and Dr. K. H. Alikunhi for introducing induced breeding techniques in Indian Major Carps in 1957, which transformed inland aquaculture.
The celebration aims to recognize the work of fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and fishermen while fostering discussions on sustainable fishery management.
The event underscores fish farmers' crucial role in meeting the rising demand for fish protein, creating job opportunities, and supporting national food security. It highlights their innovative practices and adoption of modern aquaculture methodologies, leading to increased fish productivity and conservation of aquatic resources. The Indian fisheries sector has seen impressive growth, spurred by scientific research and technological advancements.
Since 2015, the Indian government has invested approximately Rs 38,572 crore in fisheries, significantly boosting fish production from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14 to an astounding 195 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25, illustrating a 104% growth rate. Inland fisheries and aquaculture noted a remarkable 140% increase, reflecting the potential of India's water resources and government initiatives. Furthermore, seafood exports have soared past ₹60,500 crore, highlighting India's dominance in shrimp exports, with production increasing by 270% over the last decade.
The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAH&D)is celebrating the National Fish Farmers Day 2025 at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar on 10th July 2025.The event will be graced by Union Minister, MoFAH&D and Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singhalong with Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for MoFAH&Dand Panchayati Raj, George Kurian, Minister of State for MoFAH&D and the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Government of Odisha, GokulanandaMallick. Union Minister of Fisheries will announce key initiatives such as new Fisheries Clusters, the ICAR Training Calendar, and guidelines for seed certification. The minister will also honor beneficiaries from various sectors, including traditional fishers and promising start-ups, while inaugurating fisheries projects to promote infrastructure and inclusive growth.
This celebration acknowledges the essential efforts of fish farmers and fishers, thanking them for their pivotal role in enhancing the Indian fisheries sector's success, and provides a platform to discuss future trends and opportunities.
