Washington, July 8(HS): Flooding in Texas has led to severe destruction, marking it as one of the most catastrophic disasters in a century, with over 100 fatalities, including 27 girls from a girls' camp. The Trump administration faces opposition criticism regarding insufficient resources for relief efforts, allegations the administration denies.
President Trump commented on the disaster's severity after leaving the Bedminster golf course, labeling it the most horrific disaster in a hundred years but avoided responding to inquiries about whether federal agency layoffs, including those at the National Weather Service, contributed to the worsening situation.
Senate Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Christopher S. Murphy, have called for investigations into staff shortages potentially impacting flood responses. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt defended the National Weather Service's staffing and accused Democrats of politicizing the tragedy. Republican allies, like Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Chip Roy, condemned the blame placed on political opponents during tragedy. President Trump noted collaboration with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and emphasized that the Department of Homeland Security is responding to the situation.
