Delhi, 7 July (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the BRICS Summit in Brazil on Monday, announced India's intent to redefine the BRICS grouping under its forthcoming chairmanship, advocating for a focus on Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability. He expressed a commitment to emphasizing people-centric progress throughout India's leadership of the bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. PM Modi emphasized that, similar to India's G20 Presidency, the forthcoming BRICS agenda would prioritize inclusivity and the concerns of the Global South. The collaborative spirit among BRICS nations was evident as leaders participated in the traditional family photo at the summit, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, gathering representatives from member and partner nations.
The summit, hosted by Brazil from July 6 to July 7, featured leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.New members include like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. During this significant event, discussions revolved around key topics such as global governance reform, peace and security, multilateralism, development, and the regulation of Artificial Intelligence. PM Modi expressed gratitude to Brazil for its hospitality and efficient organization of the event, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South, particularly in accessing climate finance and technology.
In Earlier Session, PM Modi's address on global governance emphasized the need for reforming institutions like the UN Security Council, IMF, World Bank, and WTO to confront modern challenges, advocating for a multipolar world. He highlighted terrorism as a serious threat, citing a recent Pahalgham attack in India, and called for BRICS nations to adopt zero tolerance towards it. PM Modi encouraged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts and affirmed India’s commitment to peace-building. He proposed the New Development Bank focus on sustainable projects, establishing a Science and Research repository for the Global South, ensuring resilient supply chains for critical minerals, and promoting responsible AI governance.
Following these discussions, the member countries finalized the 'Rio de Janeiro Declaration,' reflecting a commitment to collaborative efforts moving forward under India's BRICS chairmanship, aligned with the overarching goals of resilience, innovation, and sustainability in international cooperation.
