Mumbai, 08 July (HS): The historical sword of Raje
Raghuji Bhonsale will be brought back to Maharashtra in the last week of July or
before August 15. The sword was purchased by the Maharashtra Government at an auction in London for Rs 69,94,437, including all taxes, on April 29, 2025. The
information was provided by the Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar in both
the House of the State Legislature on Monday.
The diamond-studded sword on which the name of Raje
Raghuji Bhonsale is inscribed probably was taken away to London by the East
India Company. Raghuji Bhonsale –I was the Sardar of the Maratha Army from 1695 to
1755 in the dynasty of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. He was known for his bravery
and effective mobilisation of his army.
On the declaration of auction, Chief Minister Devendra
Fadnavis took the initiative and moved resources to buy back the sword through the
Star Worldwide Group Pvt Ltd.
