Kolkata, 8 July (H.S.) -

Birbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Amandeep Singh has filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court, accusing the National Commission for Women (NCW) of interfering in the ongoing police investigation against senior Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal. The SP contended that the NCW's repeated interventions are obstructing due investigative procedures.

The matter was mentioned on Tuesday before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, with a hearing expected on Wednesday.

The controversy stems from a complaint filed by the officer-in-charge of Bolpur Police Station, Liton Haldar, who alleged that Mondal used abusive language against him over the phone and made objectionable remarks about female members of his family. The district police subsequently initiated an investigation into the complaint.

Taking cognisance of the incident, the NCW had twice sought an “Action Taken Report” from Birbhum police. Dissatisfied with the responses, the Commission summoned SP Amandeep Singh to appear before it in New Delhi on July 14, also instructing him to present the case diary related to the investigation.

Challenging this move, the SP has argued in court that such direct involvement by the NCW not only hinders the investigative process but also raises concerns over the autonomy of the police force.

The NCW has also questioned why Anubrata Mondal has not yet been taken into custody for interrogation, despite the nature of the allegations. The police, however, maintain that Mondal has been cooperating with the investigation and that there has been no need to arrest him so far.
