Shivmoga, 06 July (H.S.) : The police have arrested two miscreants in connection with the idol desecration case that took place in Bangarappa Layout of Shivamogga city. Rehmatullah and Saddam have been taken into custody and are being interrogated intensively.
On the evening of 05 July, the accused had set foot on a Ganesha statue installed in a park next to the main road in Bangarappa Layout and thrown a Naga idol into the drain before fleeing. The incident had angered the locals and created a tense situation in the area for some time.
Locals were caught on camera thrashing the accused. District Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar, who immediately rushed to the scene, pacified the people and assured them that strict action would be taken against those who violated the law.
Shivamogga City MLA Channabasappa, who visited the spot, condemned the incident and urged the corporation officials to also take action against the person who was illegally constructing the building.
According to locals, the accused are from outside and it is regrettable that such an act has taken place among people of different castes and religions living in harmony in this area. The police department has already identified those who have disturbed law and order situation to take stern action.
The situation is now under control, and tight police security has been deployed in the surrounding areas, including Bangarappa Layout.
