Washington, July 4 (H.S.): The 'One Big Beautiful Bill' championed by U.S. President Donald Trump has been passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, marking a key step toward fulfilling Trump's domestic agenda. The bill, which saw a narrow passage of 218-214 votes, focuses on increasing tax cuts while cutting funding for social safety nets. It unites Republicans while drawing united opposition from Democrats, with Representative Hakeem Jeffries delivering a record-long speech against it. Critics argue the bill primarily benefits the wealthy and threatens health care for Americans.
The legislation is projected to add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over a decade, while reducing government revenue by $4.5 trillion and cutting spending by $1.2 trillion. Despite potentially avoiding an immediate debt default, analysts warn it could worsen America's long-term debt problems and result in cuts to healthcare, food security programs, and green energy initiatives.
International President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Milton Jones, criticized the bill as harmful to working families, calling its cuts brutal and economically reckless. Trump celebrated the passage, framing it as a gift for families freed from the death tax and stating it fulfills promises to Iowans for the upcoming 2024 elections. The bill now awaits Trump's signature to become law, representing both a victory for the Republican Party and a political risk ahead of next year’s midterms.
After the bill's passage, White House Press Secretary Karoline Claire Leavitt announced President Trump might sign it Friday at 5 PM. The signing ceremony on July 4 will coincide with a White House picnic. Vice President JD Vance celebrated the passage, expressing gratitude on X for completing it by the holiday.
