Kolkata, 3 July (H.S.):
The family of 13-year-old Tamanna Khatun, who was killed in last month’s bomb blast in West Bengal’s Nadia district, has decided to approach the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The family has appointed senior advocate and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya as their legal counsel.
Tamanna’s mother confirmed the decision on Thursday, expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing police investigation. “The state police is only conducting a superficial inquiry. Several accused individuals named in the case are still roaming freely. We have no faith in the current investigation. Hence, we have decided to move the High Court and demand a CBI probe. Our advocate will be Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya,” she said.
Tamanna’s father added that while they had initially placed trust in the state police, the developments so far have compelled them to seek a central jk agency’s intervention. “We only want justice for our daughter,” he said.
So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the incident. However, out of the 24 individuals named in the FIR, 15 are still absconding. According to the victim’s family, the accused are linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The fatal blast occurred on June 23 during a victory procession celebrating TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed’s win in the Kaliganj bypoll. It is alleged that crude bombs were hurled during the rally, and shrapnel from the explosion fatally injured Tamanna.
The family also claims the attack was premeditated and politically motivated, targeting their home due to their ideological association with the CPI(M).
Taking serious note of the incident, the National Commission for Women (NCW) had earlier taken suo motu cognizance and sought a report from the district’s Superintendent of Police, Amarnath K., under whose jurisdiction Kaliganj falls.
