Mid-Day Meal cooks demand release of wages

Srinagar, 29 July (H.S.): Mid-Day Meal cooks engaged by the Department of School Education today demanded the release of their wages pending for the last two years.

They also demanded an increase in their monthly remuneration, which currently stands at just Rs 900.

Addressing a press conference here, the group of workers from different districts of Kashmir, shared the daily hardships they face and alleged that the Government has turned a blind eye to their plight.

“We were engaged in 2005 and since then we are being paid Rs 900 per month, which is just Rs 30 per day. How can we sustain with this”, said Bilal Ahmad Lone, one of the cooks.

Another cook, Tasleema, said that while they are demanding an increase, their wages have been pending for the last two years.

“For the last two years, the wages are pending; we work hard, do everything to discharge our duties, but despite that now hike in the wages, has been given,” she said.

She added that while the Prime Minister calls for ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,’ the reality on the ground paints a different picture.

“When we earn Rs 30 per day, how are we going to ensure the education of our children?” she remarked.

The cooks alleged that they face pressure from teachers and other officials, who threaten action if they raise their voice for their rights.

“We go at 9 in the morning and come back at 3 pm; the officials are not paying any heed to us. Even if we are unwell, we make sure to attend to our duties. We remain present well on time every morning, but in turn, all we receive is suffering-something no one is taking note of,” they said.

They added that despite expectations, especially around Eid, no relief came their way.

“During these two years, we hoped our wages would be released before Eid, but nothing came our way. Many didn’t have anything to celebrate the occasion with. Officials spend thousands on their children, but nobody thinks about our children and their future.”
