Baksa (Assam), 29 July (HS): The Manas National Park Authority in Assam's Baksa district celebrated International Tiger Day on Tuesday with a series of programs aimed at raising awareness among children, youth and the general public about wildlife conservation, particularly the protection of tigers. Messages promoting tiger and environmental conservation were prominently featured throughout the event.
International Tiger Day has been observed globally since 2010 to highlight the need for tiger protection. Continuing this tradition, the Manas National Park Authority organized the celebration in Dawodhara village of Baksa district.
The event included discussions on enhancing the effectiveness of tiger conservation in Manas. Forest camps that demonstrated excellence in areas such as park maintenance, hygiene, adherence to rules and protection efforts were recognized and awarded.
The park authority also highlighted the challenges posed by illegal encroachments, which obstruct holistic wildlife conservation efforts in the region. It was noted that the population of Royal Bengal Tigers in Manas is gradually increasing. According to the last census, the park was home to around 60 tigers, including cubs. While the results of the latest tiger survey have not been released, the park authority expressed optimism about a possible increase in tiger numbers this year.
The event witnessed participation from CSD Suman Mahapatra, Manas Deputy Director Shashidhar Reddy, Barin Bodo (Ranger of Bahbari Range), Vivekananda Pathak (Ranger of Bhuinpara Range) and hundreds of local residents.
