Kohima, 22 July (HS): Northeast Development Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia participated in the high-level task force meeting organized with the aim of strengthening the handloom and handicraft sector in the Northeast. The meeting was chaired by Nagaland Chief Minister Nephiu Rio, in which Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Assam Textile Minister Urkhao Gaura Brahma along with senior officials of Manipur and Central Government were present.

On this occasion, Minister Scindia said that Northeast India has full potential to realize Prime Minister Modi's vision of 'Fashion for Environment and Empowerment'. He said, The traditional arts of the Northeast, environmental awareness and excellent handicraft skills can make it the leader of the global green fashion revolution. We have to use our cultural heritage for livelihood, innovation and to make India's identity on the global stage. The meeting emphasized on strategic interventions to revitalize the handloom-handicraft ecosystem, including market access, technology utilization, skill development and sustainable livelihood opportunities. The task force resolved to work with all stakeholders towards making the sector a pillar of sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Union Minister Scindia also presented a strategic plan for the modernization of the sector, prioritizing better infrastructure, design and digital inclusion and skill building. The key schemes include creating artisan clusters, setting up common facility centers and promoting 2-3 key products at the national level. Under this, there is a plan to prepare self-help groups in accordance with global standards, create a grassroots-up value chain so that the local craft industry can successfully compete in the national and international market.
