Delhi, 10 July (H.S.): The Ministry of Culture announced a two-year official commemoration for the 125th birthday of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, recognizing his significant influence on India's political, cultural, educational, and industrial domains. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, reflecting on Dr. Mookerjee’s vision for national unity, noted that today’s India is realizing the aspirations he envisioned, including moments of pride like India’s aerospace achievements and the successful implementation of laws in Kashmir. He emphasized the Modi government’s commitment to Dr. Mookerjee’s vision of a self-reliant and united India, focusing on how the country should progress post-independence.

Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, highlighted Dr. Mookerjee's enduring relevance, identifying him as a patriotic visionary committed to India’s integrity. He reiterated the importance of national unity and democratic values that Dr. Mookerjee championed, which continue to be tested and upheld by the nation. He emphasized that the commemoration is extensive, spanning all states and union territories, and will serve as inspiration for future generations over the next two years.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, discussed Dr. Mookerjee's impressive legacy as a scholar and statesman, recognizing his brilliance and principled stance, including resigning from the government when he found ideological conflicts. He praised Dr. Mookerjee's courage and integrity, which he deemed rare and defining of his legacy.

Dr. Mahesh Chandra Sharma, President of Ekatma Manav Darshan Anusandhan Evam Vikas Pratishthan, reflected on Dr. Mookerjee's resistance to partition during India’s independence and his efforts in preserving parts of Bengal and Assam. He highlighted Dr. Mookerjee's role as a prominent voice against divisive politics, distinguishing him from leaders who negotiated solely with the Muslim League.

Dr. Anirban Ganguly from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation provided a comprehensive overview of Dr. Mookerjee’s life, emphasizing his dedication to national unity and constitutional integrity. He recalled Dr. Mookerjee's opposition to Article 370 and his significant achievements, such as becoming a Vice Chancellor at 33 and founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, showcasing his embodiment of youthful aspirations and a self-reliant vision for India.

The event included engaging segments that highlighted Dr. Mookerjee's life and contributions. An exhibition showcased his journey, ideological impact, and role in shaping India's democratic and industrial landscape through photographs and archival documents. A commemorative stamp and coin were released to honor his contributions, serving as lasting tokens of recognition. The National School of Drama presented a theatrical production centered on Dr. Mookerjee’s life, depicting crucial moments in his career, while a light instrumental ensemble of young scholars delivered a soulful musical tribute under the guidance of eminent flautist Pt. Chetan Joshi.

The two-year commemoration, running from July 6, 2025 to July 6, 2027, will consist of various events, exhibitions, and outreach programs nationwide, emphasizing Dr. Mookerjee's multifaceted legacy in nation-building, education, industrial growth, and cultural diplomacy, ensuring his ideals continue to inspire future generations.
