Kolkata, 1 July (H.S.) — Following the recent gang rape of a student on the campus of South Kolkata’s Kasba Law College, the institution has been temporarily shut. In the wake of the incident, civil rights organization APDR (Association for Protection of Democratic Rights) has demanded the immediate suspension and resignation of the college’s Vice-Principal Nayana Chattopadhyay and Governing Body Chairperson Ashok Deb.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday morning by APDR General Secretary Ranjit Sur, the organization questioned why the Vice-Principal has not yet been removed from her post despite the gravity of the crime committed within the college premises. The statement asserted that a fair and impartial investigation is not possible while she continues to hold her position. The same applies, it added, to Ashok Deb, who heads the college's governing body.
APDR alleged that such a horrific incident could not have occurred without a certain degree of administrative negligence or possible complicity. The organization suggested that there may be deeper collusion behind the crime, and emphasized that accountability should extend beyond the perpetrators to those in administrative positions who may have failed in their duties.
The rights group called on both the state government and the college authorities to immediately suspend Nayana Chattopadhyay and initiate a thorough investigation into the roles of both her and Ashok Deb. If found guilty of any wrongdoing, APDR demanded that strict punitive action be taken against them.
