Delhi, 4 June (H.S.): The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi today extended his congratulations to Lee Jae-Myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea.
In a post on X, he wrote:
Congratulations to Mr Lee Jae-Myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea. Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.
Liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung won the presidency amid political unrest after Yoon Suk Yeol's controversial martial law. In his address, he asserted a strong deterrence against North Korea backed by the South Korea-US alliance while advocating for dialogue to achieve lasting peace. Lee called for unity among citizens and emphasized hope for the future. While conservative contender Lee Jun-seok captured 7.7% of the vote, his campaign aimed to engage a younger electorate and position himself as a future leader.
